So we arrived in Santander with Ryanair and took the bus to Ribadesella
and one day later we took our Rucksacks and let the journey began. It was very
exciting and we walked mostly beside the coast. So we had always our eyes in
the direction of the sea.
For the accommodations we tried twice the pilgrim hostels. They are very
cheap for pilgrims. As the case may be you just had to pay 5€ for one night.
Its more like a donation for the hostels... Mostly you get a bed in one big
room with other 20 or more people (just other pilgrims). You share a kitchen
and a bath with all of them.
Sure its not the most luxurious way of traveling,
but we did want to do it properly like a real pilgrim, you know. After 3 days
we walked more than 80 km from Ribadesella to Gijon. It was an adventure and I
think I will do it again. Maybe next year with more time to do it. We just had
planned one week for 80km, but ended up with 80km in 3 days :-D...
Nicest thing that happended?!
A Dog followed us on our way through the wilderness. Once we had a rest,
because my Mum needed it and I was hungry. So we paused on a wall with some
food. After we decided to go forward, a dog passed our way. He was very
handsome. He had red fur and looked like a fox. He saw us, ate our cheese rind
and it has happened. Since this magical moment he never let us go! He left his
home and walked with us. It was a crazy experience. It never happened to me. So
he came along with us more than 10 km. He loved us. Really. And we loved him
since the first moment. But we decided to leave him in a small suburb at a
spanish bar, where the people loved him aswell. We couldn´t take him with us
into the city.Never! It was very hard to leave him. We gave him our complete
food and walked to the next station Gijon. Now I have him in my mind. I called
him „Queso“. The spanish word for cheese :-D So look how nice he was!
What I´ve learned?!
The reason I´ve wanted to walk a part of the Camino de Santiago was to
calm down from Uni, work and everyday life. After a lot of essays and a lot of
working and no free time for myself I´ve felt leached out. I was demotivated
and wanted to do something else. It had to be something where I leave my home
and my usual space to think about other things, about myself and about things
that have to change in the near future. So here I am, not a whole NEW ME , but
I´ve thought about a lot of things and one thing is to write more blog posts,
to work out more than just once a week and enjoy the last year at uni. I can
really recommend it warmly to you. It´s new and refreshing. You just walk and
have time to think! And maybe you will also fell in love with a dog called
Queso ;)
See you next time!
